Thoroughly enjoyed talking to Amrita Sadarangani about the history of Talpurs, their administration, foreign policy, and culture. The interview turned out to be a bit informal, which I prefer, hence we ended up with some oral history and anecdotes.

Here is a short introduction copied from the back cover of my book Talpur Rule in Sindh published in 2002 by Ferozsons Lahore, Pakistan.

For the first time, the scattered information of the Talpurs and their rule has been pieced together in a complete story. Beginning from ancient Baloch migrations, it describes the emergence of Talpurs and lists their contributions. These include adding Karachi, Omarkot and Shikarpur to Sindh, building defensive forts on its borders, constructing irrigation canals, encouraging commerce and above all making Sindh independent of Afghanistan. All this came to an abrupt end in 1843 when British conquered Sindh. “Talpur Rule in Sindh” describes this conquest in the background of Britain’s humiliating defeat in Afghanistan. It further describes how British portrayed a tarnished image of the Talpurs. The one sided British record has been used by a number of later writers. “Talpur Rule in Sindh” uses local sources, as well ,to present the other side of the story.
